April is Poetry Month

April is Poetry Month

April is Poetry Month, and throughout the month classrooms will be focusing on reading and writing poetry. In addition to classroom activities, we will be hosting a school-wide Poetry Jam, which will happen during school hours on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Families are invited to attend. Presenting poems at this event is completely voluntary but offers students an opportunity to share favorite poems that they have read or have written at home/in class.

Students in preschool through third grade may choose to recite a favorite poem that they have read, or they may write an original poem to share. Students in grades 4-8 will share original poems that they have written.

If your child is interested in participating, please sign below to confirm that you are aware of what Poetry Jam is and to acknowledge your child’s decision to participate. Also, please attach a copy of your child’s selected poem for approval. It is the child’s responsibility to practice their chosen poem at home although there may be opportunities to practice in the classroom. A rehearsal will be held a few days before this special event.

This is a great opportunity for students to be creative and practice performing in front of an audience. The following are some ideas for helping your student(s) practice reciting his/her poem in front of an audience.

Posture: Student stands straight and makes eye contact with the audience.

Accuracy: Student recites poem comfortably without prompting and few word changes.

Creativity: Student uses simple props, hand motions, and movement to creatively express the meaning of the poem to the audience.

Voice: Student reads loud and clear using emotion, pausing, and expression.
